A little bit of history

A little bit of history

A little bit of history

The Northman-Cup Regatta was born out of an initiative of the management of the Northman Yacht Shipyard and the sailing community based around a popular Internet message board – SailForum.pl. The first regatta took place on 16-18 October 2009 on the waters of Lake Mamry. At that time, the Northman Shipyard made ten Maxus 33 yachts available to the members of the SailForum. During the event, the participants got to meet each other on sailing party nights, when many online-based relations could transform into real-life friendships. The success of the first Northman-Cup encouraged the organiser to give a more open character to the event and to increase the number of yachts available.

The following year, apart from SailForum members, the regatta was attended by members of the Mazury.info.pl sailing forum, customers of Ahoj Czarter and the Northman Shipyard, and representatives of the “Miesięcznik Żagle” magazine. The organiser also provided some yachts for individual personal charter, especially for sailing enthusiasts wanting to finish the season by doing something really special in the beautiful autumn surroundings. The Northman-Cup 2010 was divided into three yacht classes: Maxus 33, Maxus 28, Maxus 24 – with the total of 49 vessels and 250 participants. The event won the “Złoty Pagaj SailForum 2010” title in the “Sailing Event of the Year” category. One year after another, the event grew in popularity among the sailing community. In 2011, there were 78 vessels participating in the regatta, carrying Polish, Russian and Belarusian crews.

During the Northman-Cup Regatta 2011, the races were divided into four categories of yachts manufactured in Węgorzewo: Maxus 33, Maxus 28, Maxus 24, Maxus 21. The event was attended by 400 people.

At the participants’ request, since 2013, lectures dedicated to sailing have been held the day before the main event. An integral part of the event are also firework displays, enjoyed by the participants as they dance the night away with shanties in the background.

In 2015, the seventh Northman-Cup was attended by over 550 participants, racing on 91 yachts. The route was one long-distance course with the start on Lake Mamry and the finish line on Lake Święcajty.

In 2016, 107 yachts were registered for the regatta, one of which did not qualify for the race. The event saw over 650 participants. The biggest sailing event in Poland dedicated to single-type cabin yachts also became the biggest regatta in the Masuria region in 2016. Among the participants were sailors from Poland, Russia, Belarus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Lithuania, Australia and Italy, partners and customers of the Northman Shipyard and Ahoj Czarter, as well as guests from sailing message boards (Sail Forum, Mazury Info Pl). The yachts were divided into eight categories: Maxus 33.1 RS, Maxus 33, Maxus 28, Maxus 26, Maxus evo 24, Maxus 24, Maxus 22 and the sports class. As every year, the event was bursting with fighting spirit, emotions and happy tears, enjoyed over the three-day regatta. As it is our tradition, a fantastic meal was also provided, with exquisite fish and game dishes, and the party continued all night long.

See you at the next Northman-Cup Regatta! 🙂
